“We Dream of Beloved Freedom”
Introduction:
“We Dream of Beloved Freedom” is a pre-conference of the 2027 SCE annual gathering, this pre-conference will gather ethicists, religious leaders, community activists and organizers for a series of panels and conversations focusing on the broad and multifaceted relationship between ethics and capitalist political economy.
Theme:
The panels and conversations in this pre-conference will focus on the material conditions of the deep transitions and crises taking place across the U.S. and globe. We aim to engage scholars and practitioners whose work addresses the structural evil of capitalism and its many malformations and manifestations. Social ethicists, along with several of approaches in the field of Christian ethics, have long developed critiques of the economy and economic justice. In recent decades, social ethicists have explored the relation of capitalism to other injustices: ecological, gender and sexual, colonial, and racial injustices. Rarely, however, is there a sustained and collective focus on capitalism as such as a social and institutional force that terrorizes everyday life. Our proposal is to generate such a conversation, using the pre-conference of the Society of Christian Ethics as a platform to convene and collaborate with scholars and practitioners whose work is devoted to dreams of beloved freedom.
